Soda Can Lab

What is it? A lesson plan for teaching concepts of thin-walled tube stability to elementary, middle, and high school students using soda cans.

Fig. 1: Soda can exhibiting local, global, and probably distortional buckling, too

Why is it useful? This tool provides slides, goals, and notes for implementing this lesson plan. The lesson teaches complex topics in stability using household objects.

Supplies needed: Enough clean and empty soda cans for each participant (or small groups of participants) to make two can specimens, plus 20% excess for demonstration; craft supplies (popsicle sticks, aluminum foil, glue, masking tape, pipcleaners, etc.); compression testing machine or dead weights to load cans (books); slide projector.
